Blackheads- What they are and how to treat them

Make it stand out

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Chances are you've noticed those pesky little black dots on your face. You might have been tempted to squeeze them to see little strings of gunk come out. Maybe you're using a face mask to draw them out, or those nose strips to yank them away. What are these spots, and how do you clear them up? Well, my friends, these are blackheads—a common issue almost everyone faces at some point. They can be quite a nuisance, showing up at inconvenient times and often making us feel self-conscious about our skin.

What are blackheads?

Blackheads are blocked hair follicles filled with oil and debris. When oxygen hits the top of the "plug," the melanin pigment turns black, hence the name blackhead. If the pore doesn't have an opening, it becomes a whitehead. These tiny, dark spots can be stubborn and persistent, often requiring effort to manage and remove.

Blackheads are commonly caused by over-production of oil, which can be triggered by hormones, stripping the skin, and using the wrong products. A build-up of dead skin cells that don't shed properly prevents oil from leaving the pore, leading to blackheads. This can be frustrating, as it often feels like no matter what you do, they keep coming back.

How to treat blackheads?

Preventing blackheads is the best approach. Once you have them, clearing them without professional help can be tricky. Here are three essential steps to prevent and eliminate blackheads:

  1. Use the Right Skin Products: Choose products specifically formulated for your skin type. Using the wrong ones can lead to blackheads, which are frustrating and challenging to deal with. Understand your skin's unique needs and select products that cater to those needs.

  2. Exfoliate Regularly: Exfoliate your skin at least twice a week. This helps remove dead skin cells blocking oil from purging, preventing blackheads, and keeping your skin fresh. Regular exfoliation can significantly improve your skin's texture and appearance.

  3. Incorporate Beneficial Ingredients: Include products in your skincare routine that contain:

    • Salicylic Acid

    • Retinoids

    • Green Tea

    • Glycolic Acid

These ingredients help break down the oil and debris that cause blackheads, making it easier to keep your skin clear and healthy.

If you still find yourself having difficulty clearing your skin, it might be a good idea to call a local spa and set up a facial appointment with an esthetician for professional extractions. Please DO NOT attempt to extract them yourself. Although it is tempting, you can cause more harm to your skin and potentially spread more bacteria, which could lead to even more blackheads. Professional help can ensure that your skin is treated gently and effectively, reducing the risk of further irritation or breakouts.
